The second smallest island of the Canaries delights with wild nature and lush green nature. Rugged, volcanic mountain landscape and blue sea characterise the landscape of the island. You can clearly feel and see the influence of the volcanoes. With barely twenty thousand residents, the small island is the ideal place to escape the daily routine.
Pure nature on La Gomera
Since 2012, the entire island has been a biosphere reserve, which is why a balance is maintained between the development of the island and the protection of its rich nature. While active tourism is encouraged, the focus is always on the heritage: the landscape, unique plants and animals, endemic species and culture.
In the heart of the island is the Garajonay National Park, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986. The park is a paradise where lush forests and unique plants can be found. The mystical national park is very easy to explore on foot thanks to the extensive hiking trails.
The Valle Gran Rey - "Valley of the Great King" - has become one of the most popular holiday destinations on La Gomera. In the valley you can either relax on the beach or be active and go hiking or mountain biking. The appearance of the valley is characterised by impressive terraced fields and colourful houses with colourful gardens. In the evening, cosy bars, restaurants and, of course, the fantastic sunset attract people.
Those who want to get to know the original La Gomera are in good hands in Hermigua. The wide valley lies romantically between imposing mountain ranges and is therefore ideal for hiking. But there is also plenty of bathing fun to be enjoyed. You can cool off and relax in Hermigua's natural swimming pool. Numerous watery ravines provide sufficient moisture in the area, which is why Hermigua has the largest banana harvest in La Gomera. The waterfall of the Rio de el Cedro, which falls about 100 metres into the valley, is also a fascinating sight.
In the northwest of La Gomera you will find the quiet village of Vallehermoso, overlooked by the imposing volcanic cone Roque Cano. Because of this, the village is the ideal starting point for hiking tours. But the village itself also has its charm. Winding, pretty alleys and decorative houses form the romantic townscape. The beautiful Plaza de la Constitution forms the centre of the village and is very lively with lots of bars and restaurants. The beach of Vallehermoso is framed by a beautiful rocky cliff. However, as the Atlantic is always quite wild at this point, bathing is only recommended for experienced swimmers. For other bathers, a bathing area with showers, changing rooms and a snack bar has been built. A few metres away is the Castillo del Mar, a former unloading station. The historic building by the sea provides a unique flair.
The unique beauty of La Gomera will enchant every visitor. On this small island, away from mass tourism, you can escape from everyday life and let your soul dangle.
I was on La Gomera for 2 weeks now and loved it! The peace and quiet and the wonderful nature! I want to go there soon again... Thanks for reminding me to book for next year!
