El Hierro - The Island of the Giant Lizard
El Hierro is famous for its flora and fauna - especially for the giant lizard Lagarto gigante.
El Hierro is the smallest island in the Canary Islands with 10,162 inhabitants. The capital is Valdere with 4973 inhabitants and is especially popular with culture lovers with its numerous museums and churches.
The island is especially recommended for individual tourists, nature and culture lovers.
Laurel and pine forests can also be found in this landscape, which is characterised by volcanoes - although the number of laurel trees cannot be compared with those on La Gomera.
Hotspots for bathing holidays can be found here, especially in the south in the harbour of La Restinga, Tacoron or in the sea pools of Los Sargos or La Maceta. These sea pools are numerous in the Canary Islands and should definitely be visited during a stay.
