Sights on the volcanic island
The capital Arrecife should definitely be visited - and not only because there is the airport. The island's capital has a lot to offer when it comes to sightseeing. The charming harbour, the natural lagoon El Charco de San Ginés, the Iglesia de San Ginés, the city beach, historic castles and the old town invite you to stroll and wander.
A particularly popular destination is the Timanfaya National Park. It impresses with its impressive lava landscape, spectacular volcanic cliffs and the so-called fire mountains. The national park offers free guided tours, but you can also explore it on your own. The unusual nature of the landscape will leave you in amazement.
The most popular tourist centre is Playa Blanca in the south of the island. The former fishing village fascinates guests today with beautiful beaches, as well as with a water sports centre. The 7-kilometre-long promenade invites you to stroll around with numerous restaurants, cafés and bars.
If you are looking for a breathtaking panoramic view, the Mirador del RÃo is the ideal place to go. Located on an impressive cliff is the work of art by the previously mentioned César Manrique. The viewpoint was uniquely designed, even if it doesn't look that way from the outside. The huge glass window even lets you look down on the small neighbouring island of La Graciosa, and on the inside there are special sculptures by the artist.
