La Gomera - The island of the whistling language
Silbo Gomera is the name of the language of the indigenous people of La Gomera, who communicated by whistling. Even today, people communicate in this unique way.
La Gomera has 21,952 inhabitants and, at 12 million years old, is one of the oldest Canary Islands.
The capital of the island is San Sebastian, which is also the centre of the island, as it is the only place where you can find a supermarket, for example, or the largest supermarket on the island.
La Gomera is also not the main destination for holidaymakers and offers a great opportunity to escape from everyday life. The municipality of La Gomera, with the former capital of the indigenous Guanches, is particularly well-known among tourists, and a beautiful bay with a sandy beach belongs to it.
La Gomera is especially known for the largest contiguous laurel forest on earth, the Garajonay National Park, in the north.
