The smallest inhabited island of the Canary Islands attracts visitors with its seclusion and invites them to forget everyday life. With hardly any cars allowed, no asphalted roads, just 600 inhabitants and only two villages, La Graciosa is truly undeveloped. However, this is exactly what attracts visitors. You are not distracted by noise or masses of tourists and can simply enjoy the day in peace. The island also offers a fascinating beauty, so that it honours its name "The Graceful"...
An island to enjoy
The northernmost island of the Canaries can only be reached from the north in Lanzarote. Órzola is the northernmost town of Lanzarote and from there a passenger ferry goes to La Graciosa. The journey takes about 25 minutes and then you are already in the island paradise. The island's landscape is rather barren and desert-like, yet it fascinates thousands of visitors, especially with its paradise beaches.
One famous beach is Playa la Francesca. The unspoilt beach is about 2 kilometres from the capital Caleta de Sebo. You can also reach the beach on foot in less than an hour by walking along the coast. The dream beach is divided into two parts by a rock formation. When the tide is high, the water fills a lagoon through which the water is very calm and suitable for children.
Playa las Conchas is another beach worth visiting on the island. The beach does not have a special unique selling point, but the unique play of colours is a source of amazement. The waves are rather wild, so you should not plunge recklessly into the waves. The contrast of the deep blue water and the light, fine sand will take your breath away. The seclusion and tranquillity of the beach is also balm for the soul.
Right next to Playa las Conchas is Montana Bermeja. The volcanic mountain rises high and is bathed in red tones. From the mountain, you have a breathtaking view of the entire island and Playa las Conchas in particular looks beautiful from the mountain. The climb up the mountain is short but steep and therefore strenuous. However, the effort definitely pays off.
La Graciosa is perfect for hiking or mountain biking. If you want to explore the island on foot, there are plenty of options. The paths stretch in all directions and since there are no paved roads, you have free choice. It's best to have a small map given to you on the ferry, as all the paths are well described there, including times. If you prefer to cycle, you can borrow one from one of the many bike hire shops and explore the island on two wheels. Since the distances are not very long, this is also a good alternative.
If you want to take it a little easier, you can also explore the island on a guided 4x4 tour. The off-road tours are a little more comfortable, but still promise adventure when exploring the island.
Although the island is barren, the landscape provides enormous fascination for visitors. The contrasts are unique and due to the remoteness and undiscovered nature of the island, one has the feeling of exploring an undiscovered island all the time.
That sounds like an absolute dream island! Can't wait to sunbath at the nice beach.
